FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A detective who has been with a South Florida sheriff’s agency for nearly 21 years is accused of falsifying information in multiple cases and of threatening one victim with deportation.Detective Demetrious Campbell, 48, was arrested Tuesday on nine counts of official misconduct and one count of extortion, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. He was suspended without pay and remained in the Broward County Jail on Wednesday morning.“Sex offenses are such heinous crimes to recover from because of the emotional and sometimes physical scars endured by victims that last for many years,” Sheriff Gregory Tony said in a statement. “Failure to fully investigate such serious crimes is reprehensible and downright disgraceful.”The investigation began when a victim called the agency’s sex crimes unit to ask about her case, the new release said, and Campbell told his supervisor the victim was uncooperative. The sergeant reopened that ca...Start mammograms at 40, not 50, a US health panel recommends

WASHINGTON (AP) — Women should start getting every-other-year mammograms at age 40 instead of waiting until 50, according to a draft recommendation from a federal task force. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has long said women can choose to start breast cancer screening as young as 40, with a stronger recommendation that they get the X-ray exams every two years from age 50 through 74.Tuesday’s update -– if the draft proposal is finalized -– would mark a shift in the influential panel’s guidelines although it’s not likely to end confusion. Other health groups differ over when and how often to screen.“This new recommendation will help save lives and prevent more women from dying due to breast cancer,” said former task force chair Dr. Carol Mangione. The task force noted that Black women are 40% more likely to die of breast cancer than white women, making mammograms at 40 an especially important step -– but also urged more research to better understand and combat the dispar...Police search for missing 13-year-old boy from Oakland Park

BERLIN — Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko is seeking assurances from his counterpart in Berlin that Ukraine will be able to send seriously injured soldiers to Germany’s capital safe in the knowledge that their medical costs will be met. In a letter to new Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner seen by POLITICO, Klitschko noted that some 250-500 Ukrainian troops will need treatment each month for lost limbs. “At least some of these patients could certainly be cared for in your city in view of the special expertise of the clinics in Berlin — but at present it will unfortunately not be possible to reimburse the costs in your city,” he wrote in his two-page letter. Germany had pledged that injured Ukrainian civilians and soldiers have unbureaucratic and fast access to high-quality medical care after their arrival in Germany without having to bear any costs themselves, but private groups have to take over the organization and financing of urgent medical care in some regions, with Berlin among them. Prime minister’s questions: a shouty, jeery, very occasionally useful advert for British politics. Here’s what you need to know from this week’s session in POLITICO’s weekly run-through.What they sparred about: Keir Starmer used the opportunity to gloat after last week’s local elections drubbing for the Conservatives. The Labour leader claimed Rishi Sunak intends “ignore the message” he was sent by the voters — and that the prime minister thinks the troubled U.K. economy is doing just fine. Sunak dusted off some PMQs classics — pointing to Starmer’s habit of U-turns, his previous support for extra coronavirus lockdowns, historic anti-monarchy views … and (deep sigh) that Liam Byrne note from 2010. It’s all in the delivery: Starmer came armed with some jokes of, well, questionable quality. How about these classics from the Labour leader? “Sunak lost a beauty contest to [Liz Truss], who then lost to a lettuce.” … “He said he&...‘I’m never going hiking with her again:’ Townsend Police rescue sisters lost in the woods
